Next steps to getting some of that therapy goodness in Australia

Ok so you’ve watched the AWESOME what is therapy video series. And now you’re giving therapy some serious thought. Great stuff. So where do you start? That is a good question my friend. Let’s get into it.

Where should I look?

You have options. One option is to make an appointment with your GP. They can direct you to a specific practice or therapist. Read the referral tip below about why this can be a good place to start.

You can also try chatting to your family or friends and asking if they have any recommendations of someone they’ve seen and liked.

Or you could do a quick search online first. Google psychologists in the area. Think about location, areas of speciality and background, any specific considerations such as neurodiversity, LGBTIQ+ etc.

So you can do your own research first then go to your GP or the other way around. There’s also the APS website which has the most comprehensive list of psychologists in Australia. Or Psychology Today.

Filter through psychologist registries according to particular issues, such as:
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Couples therapy
  • Stress management
